Dr Ayele Debebe Gemechu is a highly experienced Obstetrician and Gynecologist and public health expert with over 30 years of professional experience in maternal and child health, clinical medicine, and global health leadership. He is widely recognized for his contribution to safe motherhood, family planning, and reproductive health services in Ethiopia and internationally.
Dr. Ayele graduated in 1992 as a member of the first graduating class of JIHS and began his medical career as a General Practitioner at Kelafo Health Center in the Somali Region, where he served for three years. He later worked at Ambo Hospital before completing his postgraduate specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Addis Ababa University. After his residency, he returned to Ambo Hospital and served for five years as a specialist Obstetrician and Gynecologist, providing comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Ayele has held senior leadership positions with major international health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), EngenderHealth, and Marie Stopes International. In these roles, he worked as a National Program Officer, Technical Director, Program Director, and Global Family Planning Advisor, contributing to maternal and reproductive health programs across more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
In January 2016, Dr. Ayele founded and began managing his own Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Center in Addis Ababa. Under his leadership, the center has become a trusted facility for pregnancy care, safe delivery, gynecologic services, and family planning, currently handling an average of 80 deliveries per month.
Dr. Ayele resides in Legatafo, Shagar City, Oromia with his wife and four children. His career is defined by clinical excellence, compassionate care, and a lifelong commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes in Ethiopia and beyond.
